I’ve heard it said that “shadows prove the sunshine.” And while quips like these don’t necessarily take away the sting of this heavy season, it is in the small mantras and the tangible experiences of hope that I see a dotted-line being drawn out of this endless desert of a year.
While social distancing I’ve been taking a lot of walks around my neighborhood, and I’ve noticed this trend where rainbow artwork is displayed in the windows and door ways of homes as a way to share an image of hope to all that pass by. What a simple and powerful way of showing unconditional, neighborly love. People need a message of hope and love right now. We need to be affirmed that “it’ll all be alright”, and that these dark times won’t last forever.
I could find no better way to re-share this sentiment than through the flawless song “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves. In tandem with the release of this cover, I wanted to start an ongoing giving platform called “The Rainbow Project.” When we are finally able to emerge after this pandemic, I don’t want to see the rainbow artwork come down from windows. I want people to continue to spread hope and love to their community. “The Rainbow Project” will act as a mechanism for this by selling pieces of rainbow artwork with proceeds going back to community organizations that support LGBTQ+ Youth and Families.
There will be a break in this storm soon, and when the skies do finally open back up, I’m hoping that there will continue to be rainbows shown proudly for all to see.
